By Junior Reporter Trent Alenik This year the USTA-Nevada Awards banquet and Nate Schulman Tennis Ball, sponsored by VegasTennis.com's Marty Hennessy Jr. Tennis Foundation, Winnie and Bob Schulman, www.Tenniswarehouse.com, & Las Vegas Skin & Cancer Clinics and Shutter Booth photo rental was highlighted by a special guest speaker, Glenn Trowbridge. In addition to this high level guest, the semi formal banquet included players from all of the clubs around town, their pros, family and friends. The evening was filled with inspired youth, awards, a sit down dinner, dancing and a traditional post party bowling celebration at the Suncoast Hotel. Kicking off the evening was special guest Glenn Trowbridge who is now running for the Las Vegas City Council seat in Ward 4 against Stavros Anthony to replace Larry Brown, a strong proponent of public parks and last years speaker who is now a county commissioner. |
Glenn's web site: http://www.glenntrowbridge4lv.com Stravos's web site: http://www.anthony2009.com Stravos is a career police officer and has served the tennis community by being a captain. His opponent and our guest speaker Glenn Trowbridge has served the Las Vegas tennis community most significantly as Director of Parks and Recreation and as Chairman of the Las Vegas Planning Commission. For 25 years, Trowbridge has been a strong advocate for the development of parks and recreational facilities which has resulted in many of the new tennis courts in the valley. |
In speaking to the tennis families gathered at our annual awards banquet Glenn Trowbridge stressed hard work, serving ones community and using tennis as a vehicle to improve your whole life. "Having prominent figures in the community come and share their wisdom with our tennis families is a great mentoring tradition we put in place 4 years ago and Mr. Trowbridge was a perfect fit, being that his whole family plays tennis," explained Ryan Wolfington, Executive Director of USTA-Nevada. |
His wife Tricia Trowbridge and son Tom are both competitive tennis players, and play in the USTA tennis leagues. Glenn admits that he has not had time to keep his game up but looks forward to getting back on the court soon. While Director of the Clark County Department of Parks and Recreation, Glenn was responsible for the construction of almost a billion dollars worth of park improvements during a 20 year period of unprecedented growth in the valley. On the national level, Glenn has served as the President of the National Association of Parks and Recreation Officials and advocated for the funding and development of parks and recreational facilities throughout the United States. |
Regardless which candidate wins this political race, I hope we as a tennis community can count on both of them to support the incredible progress the City of Las Vegas, Sandy Foley and her team have achieved at the Darling Tennis Center. As for the awards, children dressed in coat and tie and summer dresses, with their family present to support them. The winners were called up individually to receive recognition for their tremendous effort in tennis. The banquet, sponsored by our "Pot Luck parents", the Pasta Shop Restaurant and the Marty Hennessy Foundation added a touch of class to what some labeled as a "Huge improvement from when I was a junior." |
Lew Deleon, now a pro at the Darling Center, said 6 years ago when he was a junior the banquet was small and barely anyone attended. "By partnering with the Marty Hennessy Foundation and their annual "Nate Schulman Tennis Ball," and the ?Las Vegas Skin and Cancer Indian Open party," we were able to make this event bigger and better than years before. These parents, pros and players are so devoted to tennis that we wanted to celebrate it the right way. We will be doing the same thing with our adults as well," explained Wolfington. |
Awards were presented by USTA-Nevada President and UNLV NCAA Champion Tim Blenkiron, Marty Hennessy, USTA-Nevada Executive Director Ryan Wolfington, USTA-Nevada junior competition Coordinator Rob Merriman and High performance tennis Director for the City of Las Vegas Darling Tennis Center, Saad Ashraaf. A special thank you was given to Hilliary Heard the Hennessy Foundations Executive Director and Rob Merriman and their volunteers for all their work to make this event possible. |
