LAS VEGAS, February 7, 2008 -- UNLV senior star Elena Gantcheva is the first Mountain West Conference player in history to be named women’s tennis player of the week seven times in a career, the league announced. Gantcheva, who has also won the most weekly awards from any conference of any men's or women's player in school history, was recognized for the second consecutive week after pulling off one of the most impressive upsets of her illustrious career. Ranked 30th in the nation in singles, the native of Sofia, Bulgaria, became the first Lady Rebel ever to defeat the No. 1 player from powerhouse Stanford on the Cardinal's home courts as Gantcheva swept No. 21 Jessica Nguyen 6-2, 7-6 last Friday. |
The win improved Gantcheva's record to 14-6 on the year and marked her fourth victory this season over a player currently ranked in the top 50 nationally. With 97 career victories she also inched closer to becoming just the third Lady Rebel in school history to reach 100 career singles wins. The women's team, ranked 40th, is off this weekend and resumes play on Feb. 15 by hosting Illinois State. Rebel standout Elliot Wronski was the MWC men’s honoree this week. |
