Stan Tomchin, a Turnberry resident and Stirling Club member, got so inspired by the children he sponsored through VegasTennis.com's Marty Hennessy Jr. Tennis Foundation that he paid for 6 of them to fly to Vancouver for a club exchange to play tennis, experience the culture and education of this international city. Their lucky destination was one of the worlds most beautiful cities and the historical Jericho Tennis Club.

American Asia Muhammad lived up to the hype today by beating the #1 junior in the world Kristina Mladenovic of France at the US OPEN. Kristina is also the 2009 French Open girls champion and a finalist at Wimbledon. Muhammad who was up 6-1, 4-1 ended up fighting off a last minute surge by Mladenovic closing it out 6-1, 6-4.

Mladenovic, was a semifinalist in the U.S. Open juniors last year and runner-up at Wimbledon juniors this year, proving she is very comfortable on the world's biggest tennis stages. With one of the best serves in the girls juniors, Mladenovic can take the initiative from the first point, but Muhammad who has been playing professionally all year has proven she can perform on the big stage as well.

FLUSHING, N.Y. - Tapping into her experience playing in one of the world's biggest tennis tournaments, Henderson's Asia Muhammad won for the first time at the U.S. Open Wednesday, advancing with a three-set win in the qualifying tournament taking place at the National Tennis Center.
Muhammad's talent is a direct result of the Andre Agassi Foundations Boys and Girls Club program where she was coached by UNLV NCAA Champion Tim Blenkiron.
"Asia is very excited to be here and she showed that on the court today. She is really starting to become a mature young lady," explained her father Ron Holmes. "But we would not be at the US OPEN if not for Andre's foundation and Asia's coach at home Tim Blenkiron. We have also been getting a lot of great help and coaching from the USTA. Asia is excited to work hard and see what she can do to make them all proud."

It was another great Sony Ericsson tennis tournament in Miami with the usual suspects including Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer but this year I had the privilege to meet a new star on the scene, Fernando Verdasco. Verdasco was getting a lot of attention due to his quick rise into the top 10 and his unique style on and off the court. The stylish 25 year old has a great game but also gets a lot of attention due to his great looks and charismatic personality that seems to attract more female fans than the normal tennis star. After seeing all the excitement around this young Spanish tennis player, I was able to interview him to find out what was behind all the buzz, and i found allot.

It all started when Fernando was 1 year old and his grandfather would seat him in front of the tv and turn the tennis on so he would stop crying. Every time he watched tennis on TV a smile would come out.He loved running around the tennis court and listening to the sound of the ball when older people would play. Whenever you took him away from the court, he would start crying. When he was 2, he could already pick up a raquet and hit the ball over the net, while the rest of the kids his age were only interested in playing soccer or watching TV. Instead of watching cartoons with his friends, he would watch matches of Agassi and McEnroe.
