Jay Stokes, owner and director of Glendoveer Tennis Center, was giving a lesson in July when he spotted a pair of young ladies on another court. One played like a beginner, the other like a Women’s Tennis Association veteran. After introductions, Stokes began to take in small bits of the Hermon Bhrane story, which we don’t encompass in these parts very often. Bhrane, 19, was born in Eritrea - a small country in the horn of Africa - but fled with her family to Germany when she was a year old to avoid Eritrea's war with Ethiopia. When she was 7, the family moved to a house next to a tennis club. Hermon's twin sister, Blul, opted for ballet. Hermon chose tennis. It became a passion. Though a natural southpaw, she was taught to play tennis right-handed, because at her club, that's the way they taught everybody. |

Stan Tomchin, a Turnberry resident and Stirling Club member, got so inspired by the children he sponsored through VegasTennis.com's Marty Hennessy Jr. Tennis Foundation that he paid for 6 of them to fly to Vancouver for a club exchange to play tennis, experience the culture and education of this international city. Their lucky destination was one of the worlds most beautiful cities and the historical Jericho Tennis Club. |

American Asia Muhammad lived up to the hype today by beating the #1 junior in the world Kristina Mladenovic of France at the US OPEN. Kristina is also the 2009 French Open girls champion and a finalist at Wimbledon. Muhammad who was up 6-1, 4-1 ended up fighting off a last minute surge by Mladenovic closing it out 6-1, 6-4. Mladenovic, was a semifinalist in the U.S. Open juniors last year and runner-up at Wimbledon juniors this year, proving she is very comfortable on the world's biggest tennis stages. With one of the best serves in the girls juniors, Mladenovic can take the initiative from the first point, but Muhammad who has been playing professionally all year has proven she can perform on the big stage as well. |
